The GLP-1 Success Guide

Everything You Need for a Successful GLP-1 Journey

Whether you're still deciding if this is the right move or your first dose is already on its way, this is everything I've learned — the habits that make it easier, the products actually worth buying, and exactly what to expect at every step.

If You've Already Ordered

Here's Exactly What Happens Next

Your order gets reviewed by the doctor, then it ships straight to you. Here's what that looks like so nothing catches you off guard.

1

Watch your email

You'll get a notification once the doctor approves your order, and again when it ships.

2

It ships packed on ice via FedEx

You may get text updates from CLOVERx, the pharmacy fulfilling your prescription — that's expected, not spam.

3

Refrigerate it the moment it arrives

Move it straight to the fridge. Everything you need — syringes, alcohol wipes, instructions — is included in the box.

Step One

Watch This Before Your First Injection

This short video from Caroline — a clinical pharmacist — walks you through exactly how to give a subcutaneous injection. Watch it once before your medication arrives so nothing feels unfamiliar when it's time, or watch now if you're just curious what's actually involved.

Framing Your Mindset

It's OK If You Don't See Results Overnight

We all hope to be the hyper-responder who practically melts away. That wasn't my reality, and it won't be the reality for a lot of you either — and that is completely normal.

For a lot of people, that first month on 2.5mg brings really minimal changes — if any. That first month isn't even a full therapeutic dose yet. It's just letting your body get used to having this peptide in your system. Don't let yourself start feeling down about it — you WILL get there.

EllieMD is very strategic and conservative with dosing on purpose, so your body has time to respond without getting crushed by side effects. It's also genuinely better for your skin to have time to adjust as you slowly lose weight, instead of trying to keep up with rapid change.

Losing 20 lbs in a month sounds amazing, but it's actually really harsh on the body and can come with its own challenges — skin sagging and hair loss among them. If we ever saw that kind of rapid loss happening, we'd want to look at slowing your dose down, not speeding it up.

It is very normal to not see significant weight loss for a few months, and for it to be slow from there — a pound at a time instead of big drops — just like it's also normal for there to be plateaus followed by drops. All of these patterns fall within the range of "normal," because every body is different, and the cellular messaging this medication is filling in and resolving can look different from person to person, even between two people on the exact same GLP-1.

Take Photos AND Measurements From Day One

I highly, highly recommend taking pictures and measurements when you begin — not because everyone needs to share them the way I do, but because you're changing day by day in a way that's genuinely hard to see in the mirror. It doesn't feel like anything is happening. Then you go back to those early photos and measurements a few months in and realize your body composition changed a lot more than the scale ever let on.

What to track: waist, hips, thighs, and arms, plus a front and side photo in similar lighting and clothing each time.

How to Feel Your Best From Day One

GLP-1s work with your body in a powerful way — and a few simple habits make the experience noticeably smoother. These aren't restrictions. Think of them as your toolkit.

H2O

Hydration Is Your Foundation

GLP-1s can blunt your thirst signals without you realizing it. Aim for 80–100 oz of water daily. Starting your morning with 16–20 oz before anything else is a game-changer.

Add electrolytes to help your body actually absorb it
ELEC

Electrolytes — Don't Skip Them

When you're eating less and hydrating more, electrolyte balance matters more than usual. A daily electrolyte supplement keeps your energy steady and your body functioning well.

Ultima or Versus Nutrition work great
PRO

Protect Your Results With Protein

Protein is what tells your body to lose fat, not muscle. Aim for 80–120g a day. Starting every meal with protein before anything else makes this easy to hit without thinking hard about it.

Greek yogurt, eggs, lean meat — simple wins
MG

Magnesium at Night

Magnesium citrate or glycinate taken before bed keeps your gut happy and your sleep deeper. It's one of those additions that quietly makes everything else work better.

Magnesium Glycinate is my pick — see below
MOVE

Movement Protects What You're Working For

Exercise tells your body that muscle is worth holding onto — especially paired with the protein you're already prioritizing. It's also one of the best tools when you feel stuck on a plateau or like things are moving slower than you'd like. You don't need a gym or a program: simple weight training or pilates, even free YouTube videos in your bedroom, can make a real difference in both your results and how you feel.

No equipment, no gym, no excuse — a free YouTube video counts
FOOD

The Peptide Handles Hunger, Not Food Quality

It's easy to assume that once your appetite drops, what you're still eating matters less. In my experience it's the opposite — I've heard from people months into treatment, eating however they want because they figured the peptide would do the work, and their results were nowhere close to what's possible. This isn't about being restrictive or perfect. Real, nourishing food is still what gets you results; the peptide just makes it so much easier to actually do it.

Think "real food, less of it" — not "anything goes because I'm not as hungry"

Feeling Sluggish? Check These Three Things First

On Tirzepatide, it's shockingly easy to underfuel without realizing it — your appetite drops, and suddenly you're eating and drinking nowhere near what your body actually needs to run well. Before you write it off as "just the medication," check:

  • Hydration — are you actually hitting your 80–100 oz today, or just meaning to?
  • Nutrition — protein, fat, and fiber all matter here, not just calories. Are you hitting your protein target? Getting enough healthy fat? Enough fiber to keep things moving?
  • Your multivitamin — are you actually taking it, or does it just live on the counter?

Nail those three first. If you're still dragging after genuinely doing all three, that's when something like Genius Caffeine or Norwegian Kelp Capsules (both below) can give you a clean lift.

Melissa's Picks

What I Actually Use — and Love

I get asked about this constantly, so here it is. These are the exact products on my shelf right now, with the flavors I reach for and why I like them.

Protein

Isopure Clear Protein — Unflavored

I love this one because it's completely clear and flavorless — I mix it into literally anything without changing the taste. I order the giant container from their site but there are smaller sizes on Amazon if you want to try it first.

Protein Shakes

FlavCity Whey Protein

I am legit OBSESSED with these shakes. The ingredients are stellar and I feel amazing on them. I have one nearly every morning for breakfast. The butter coffee is my favorite (it has 55mg of caffeine from the cold brew coffee powder in it) but I also have a bag of vanilla for versatility (add cocoa powder and it's a chocolate shake, or matcha powder for a fresh switch-up) and a bag of the Berries and Cream on hand at all times… because a girl needs options! I also ALWAYS add a scoop of Isopure Clear Flavorless protein so this one shake combo delivers a whopping FIFTY grams of protein without being overfilling — and you get full REALLY quick on a GLP-1. This combo is a huge part of my strategy for getting enough protein in a day.

Protein — Grab & Go

Aloha Protein Bars

We actually go through two boxes of these per month in my house because they are just perfect for grabbing a quick source of protein. At a certain point on GLPs figuring out what to eat can occasionally become a bit of a hassle. Sometimes you just want a no-brainer and these are fantastic! (My kids love them too, they're great for having before sports practices, not too heavy.)

Protein — On the Go

Chomps

Quick, Clean, Protein. Easy to grab & delicious. My son loves the jalapeño version! (are you sensing a theme here? Protein is SO KEY!)

Electrolytes — Low Sodium

Ultima Replenisher

Back at the beginning of my GLP-1 Journey when I was still highly reactive to salt and it caused me to swell up, these electrolytes saved me! They are low sodium but high in the minerals and nutrients… and FLAVOR! I love the mocktails in particular — Piña Colada, Peach Bellini, and Strawberry Margarita are among my favorites, but I also really loved the Passionfruit!

Versus Nutrition

My current favorite flavor is Miami Vice, but they have several to choose from. (The Blackberry Peach is definitely calling to me!) Their salt source is very high quality Pink Himalayan, and they have higher levels of potassium, magnesium, and chloride than most other brands. It's zero sugar and sweetened with stevia (but no funky taste) and has beet juice powder for color instead of artificials. You can mix as instructed with 20 ounces of water — but I like to add one scoop to my 40 ounce cup and know that I need to drink 2 a day to hit my 80 ounces of water goal!

Multivitamin

Pure Encapsulations ONE

Ok, I have been targeted for all the really expensive multivitamins, I've been lured in by the sleek packaging and sexy marketing… I've tried all the things and I have to be honest — in the end I just don't think the extra cost showed up in how I FELT. This is a quality multivitamin and it's the one that my husband and I have settled on in that quest for the best balance between cost and efficacy. We feel the difference when we run out.

Greens & Superfoods

Amazing Grass Supergreens

This has a light fresh taste that I don't mind at all and it is PACKED with nutrients and superfoods and even a decent amount of fiber! My husband does not enjoy it but drinks it faithfully because there is just no question that we feel better with it than without!

Sleep & Digestion

Magnesium Glycinate

We buy the big bottle of this one because my husband and I both take one at night and we went through the normal sized bottle obnoxiously fast. Not only does it help us sleep better, it ensures that our digestive systems don't slow down! This was the first thing my bestie told me I absolutely HAD to make sure I got when I started Tirzepatide and I am so glad I had it from the beginning and was proactive with digestion instead of having to try to resolve issues later.

Energy — No Jitters

Genius Caffeine

Sustained release so it uplifts without ever feeling like you got hit with a huge rush and then crash. Very smooth and sometimes I even wonder if I remembered to take it until I realize how I just feel alert and cheerful. It doesn't give me a “caffeinated” feeling like an energy drink (which I avoid because I'm investing FAR too much into my health for that!) but do keep in mind that my body runs particularly well on caffeine, if you are highly sensitive to it you may want to find a supplement that is only 50mg.

Energy — Caffeine-Free

Algazim Norwegian Kelp Capsules

Listen, I don't even know exactly how these work but they are amazing. Is it the nutrients in the kelp? Is it the iodine? All I know is that when I am feeling sluggish and know caffeine is not the right call I take three of these and feel so much better in about 30 minutes. My husband takes three every morning with his vitamins, I'm more of an as-needed approach, but these are the real deal! (I did not see the same effect with 2 capsules, I recommend 3!)

A Quick Note on "Made for GLP-1" Gummy Vitamins

You've probably seen the ads — little green gummy bear multivitamins marketed straight at the GLP-1 community, promising to cover exactly what you're missing now that you're eating less. I looked into them, and here's the honest breakdown: you're paying a real premium for that targeted marketing. Gummies also can't hold as much of a given nutrient per serving as a capsule or powder can, so you're often getting less for more money.

A solid multivitamin paired with a greens/superfood powder gets you a more complete, more absorbable nutrient profile — and costs less per serving than the gummies built around a GLP-1 ad campaign. Same goal, better formulation, lower price.

A Little Heads Up

Keeping Your Gut Comfortable

GLP-1s slow digestion — which is exactly how they help you feel full longer, but it's also why constipation can be a common early side effect. Your body will adjust, and staying ahead of it with a couple of easy habits means most people feel totally fine.

1

Eat regular meals, even small ones

Eating too little slows gut movement. You don't have to eat a lot — just eat consistently. Small meals throughout the day keep things moving and your energy stable.

2

Sip water throughout the day, don't chug

Large amounts of water at once can worsen nausea if your stomach is adjusting. Keep a water bottle with you and sip consistently. Electrolytes in your water help too.

3

Add fiber gradually — slow and steady

Aim for 20–30g of fiber a day from real food: chia seeds, ground flax, berries, veggies. Start slow and build up — your gut will thank you for not rushing it.

4

If nausea shows up, it's usually temporary

Most nausea on GLP-1s comes from eating the way you used to — portions that are too large, too fast, or too greasy. Smaller bites, slower eating, and protein-first meals usually resolve it quickly. If you're struggling, reach out — there are options.
